Getting Ready

I have a way to get to work Car, bus, bike, ride share, carpool, or another plan. Ask your VR counselor about transportation help if you need it.
I know my expected work schedule Full-time, part-time, or a custom schedule. You may be able to request a schedule that works with your needs.
I have a phone number employers can call A cell phone or a reliable number where you can get messages. List this on your resume and applications.
I have an email address for job applications Use a simple, professional address. Gmail or Outlook both work. Avoid nicknames or numbers that look unprofessional.
I have appropriate clothes for an interview and for work Ask your VR counselor about clothing assistance programs if you need help with this.

Documents and ID

I have a photo ID A driver’s license, state ID, or passport. You will need this to start any job. Ask your VR counselor about help getting an ID if you do not have one.
I have my Social Security card or know my Social Security number You need this to complete employment paperwork (Form I-9). Keep your card in a safe place at home.
I have my work authorization documents (if needed) If you are not a U.S. citizen, talk with your VR counselor about which documents you need to show employers.
I have names and contact info for 2–3 references Former employers, teachers, or people who know your work. Ask them first before listing their names. Do not use family members.
I can describe my past work experience Write down your past jobs: where you worked, when, and what you did. Include volunteer work and school projects too.

Resume and Applications

I have a resume (or I am working on one with my counselor) Your VR counselor can help you build one. Keep it to one page if possible. Use simple, clear language.
Someone has checked my resume for spelling and grammar errors Ask a counselor, friend, or use a free tool like Grammarly. Even one small error can hurt your chances.
I know which job boards or websites to use Try Indeed, LinkedIn, Colorado Works (coloradoworks.com), or the employer’s own website. Your VR counselor may also have job leads.
I have a list of jobs I want to apply for Keep a simple spreadsheet or paper list. Track which jobs you applied for and when, so you can follow up.
I have a cover letter or a template I can customize Not all jobs require one, but having one ready helps. Your VR counselor can help you write one that fits different job types.

Interview Skills

I know how to get to the interview location (or how to join a video call) Do a test run ahead of time. Know how long it takes to get there. For video calls, test your camera and sound the day before.
I have practiced answering common interview questions Common questions: “Tell me about yourself,” “Why do you want this job?” “What are your strengths?” Ask your VR counselor to do a practice interview with you.
I know what to wear to the interview When in doubt, dress one step nicer than what the job requires. Clean, neat clothes make a good impression.
I have 2–3 questions ready to ask the employer Good examples: “What does a typical day look like?” or “What do you like about working here?” Asking questions shows interest.
I know how to follow up after an interview Send a short thank-you email within 24 hours. It does not need to be long — just thank them for their time and say you are still interested.

Starting Work

I know who to go to with questions at work Usually a supervisor or a coworker who has been there a while. It is okay to ask questions — asking shows you care about doing things right.
I understand basic workplace expectations Arrive on time, call in if you are sick, follow the dress code, and treat coworkers with respect. Ask your employer about their specific rules.
I know how to request time off Ask your employer about the process before your first day. Some jobs require advance notice; others use an online system.
I know what workplace accommodations I may need An accommodation is a change at work that helps you do your job. See the Workplace Accommodations Guide to learn more.
I have talked with my employer about any accommodations I need (if this applies to me) You do not have to share your diagnosis. You just need to explain what you need and how it helps you do your job. Your VR counselor can help you prepare for this conversation.

Note: This checklist is a guide to help you think through job readiness. It is not a replacement for working with your VR counselor. Talk with your counselor about any items you are unsure of.
